Stretch Form Dies
We use stretch form dies to help shape large pieces of sheet metal into the form of a single contoured object or custom part. In most cases, stretch form dies hold the sheet metal between four corners, keeping it securely in place as the machine uses gripping jaws to stretch the metal. Once the sheet metal has been properly stretched, the stretch form die can be used. The machine then compresses the sheet metal into a contoured mold that shapes it into the desired object.
This process came into popularity, in large part, when there was a need for large pieces of metal shaped into a curved form without any dents, wrinkles, or malformations due to an unsteady hand. Once the technique proved successful, more and more industries (including the aerospace industry) adopted the process to save time and money, as the process could be completed quickly by a machine.
There is a variety of different uses for stretch form dies. They are utilized in the use of different kinds of metals, including steel, titanium, and aluminum. Vehicle, aircraft and space craft industries use stretch form dies often in the composition of their products. Car parts, such as the door or the hood, and shuttle parts are often made from stretch form dies, ensuring a more durable quality than pieces that have been rolled or cut.
