Resin Transfer Molds
Resin transfer molds are most often used for mid range production, and for custom parts and products that have a relatively high weight to strength ratio requirement. Resin transfer molds are the midway point between compression molding and vacuum infusion molding.
More and more industries are making use of resin transfer molds in a variety of ways and for a wide array of products. Resin transfer molding is a process that utilizes both pressure and clamps to create an object. For this type of molding to take place, a fiber reinforcement is placed inside the mold, and a clamp is applied to help hold the mold steady and secure. Under pressure, resin is injected into the mold so that air can be displaced and ventilation can assist in the process until the mold is completely filled and allowed to set.
In addition, though there are exceptions, resin transfer molds tend to work best for simpler parts and those with few complex features. Once it has finished setting, it is likely that the molded tool or part will need a little refining, requiring extra time and attention to be trimmed into perfection before it can pass into the next step of production.
